Restoring the Cathedral With One Dollar

Email Print

On the 29th November an email campaign was launched to raise funds for the Restoration.  The idea was that if sufficient Anglicans were to contribute just $1.00 USD, then we would have all the money needed.

Clearly we are talking about millions of persons contributing.  However considering that the  Anglican Communion is the third largest Christian communion in the world (behind only to the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Churches), we have a substantial support group on whom we can rely.

The success of this campaign depends heavily on this email becoming viral (internet language for an email or video being shared or watched by a vast number of persons).  An online publication has been created so that the details of this campaign can be easily emailed from one to another.  If you have not received this email, send your email address to your pew captain or email it to This email address is being protected from spambots. The Goal: To Restore the Cathedral of St. John the Divine to its former glory

 The Project:

To repair all damage to the Cathedral  caused by termite, decay, water and time.

To enhance the strength, safety and longevity of the Cathedral, using modern materials and construction techniques.

To improve the functionality with minimal changes to the layout and architecture, that do not compromise the historical integrity of the building.

Project Costs

 Phase 1(balance)—$2,000,000 USD

 Phase 2—$300,000 USD

 Phase 3—$300,000 USD

 Phase 3—$480,000 USD

 Contingencies 20% —$616,000 USD

 Total $3,696,000 USD

Why Not a New Church?

Other than a date for the return to our beloved Cathedral, this is the question most often asked.  Any examination of the costs and challenges associated with restoring an old building, makes this a legitimate question.  However, when the unique architecture, the rich history and the sentimental value of the current building are taken into account, the argument for restoration is compelling.  The truth is, restoring a building gives it a new lease on life.  So we will, in fact, have a new Cathedral while preserving the integrity and rich heritage of the old.

How We Have Helped Ourselves

Through ongoing fundraisers, improved tithing and self-help projects we have completed the roof at the cost of $960,000 USD and we are very proud of that.

How Your Dollar Will Help?

Your dollar now will help us to:

 1. Install the electrical wiring and pave the floor

 2. Rebuild the entire varnished wooden interior, the ceiling, walls and balconies.

 3. Install the pews

Once we are back worshipping in our beloved Cathedral, restoration will move to the exterior walls, walkways and churchyard.
